What is an open-ended question?

Being popularly known as free-form survey questions, open-ended questions enable respondents to answer on the basis of their understanding, perception, as well as knowledge. Supporting an open text format, these questions are not confined to a specific number of answer options. The use of open-ended questions plays a pivotal role in conducting qualitative market research. As there are no limitations of already specified answers, it empowers researchers to dive deeper into the information about a particular topic.

Example of an open-ended question

Suppose you’re conducting a survey to know about your customer experience with a particular product. You can include the following open-ended question:

Where is an open-ended question used?

In today’s time, respondents need a survey platform that lets them speak up and voice their opinions on a particular subject. If they don’t get an option to fully share their feedback, they’re most likely to abandon the survey (or sometimes move to another brand too!). Using an open-ended question comes with NO predetermined options so the respondents can jot down what’s there in the mind. The open-ended questions are highly used in scenarios where there’s a need to gather descriptive yet valuable information from respondents on a particular topic. By empowering respondents to freely convey their feedback and openly share their ideas, an open-ended question is useful when there’s a need to understand the troubles that your users are facing.

What are the advantages of using open-ended questions?

An infinite range of answers: As there is no predefined range of answer options, open-ended questions let respondents share their opinions without any restriction. This makes the respondents feel valued and they happily participate in the survey.

More valid answers: As respondents get the freedom to answer the way they want, they just don’t answer the survey for the sake of it. Moreover, open-ended questions empower them to clarify their responses which helps to solicit accurate feedback.

Handle complex situations: Sometimes there arise certain knotty conditions where there is contextualization required and a simple Yes/No answer option may not work. Using open-ended questions play an effective role in scrutinizing the problem areas and handling the situations better.

Uncover buyer personas: By allowing respondents to answer in open text format, using this question type helps to uncover the buyer personas. This can empower you to develop a better understanding of your respondents by diving into their choices, logics, opinions, and references.
