What is a Multiple Choice Question?

Being the most popular question type in surveys, Multiple choice questions enables respondents to choose answers from a predefined list of options. Considered as an intuitive question type, multiple choice questions comes with mutually exclusive options to produce data that can be easily analyzed. It also ensures a brilliant survey-taking experience for the respondents as there are fixed answer choices. The multiple-choice questions can be categorized into two types: single select and multiple select answers. The structure of a multiple-choice question consists of a stem (which is the introductory question) and a set of options with key (correct answer) and distractors (incorrect answers).

Example of Multiple Choice Question

A grocery store wants to conduct a survey for understanding the shopping behavior of its customers. Here’s how a multiple choice question can be used in this case:

Where is a Multiple Choice Question used?

Respondents hate to answer open-ended questions while participating in a survey as they require more time and effort. Including multiple choice questions in your survey empowers respondents to select the right answer option that matches well with their needs. While a single select multiple choice question is usually implemented in dichotomous surveys (with yes/no answer options), election polls, and online assessment tests (conducted by schools and universities), multiple select multiple-choice questions are used in healthcare surveys (to understand patients’ concerns) and market research surveys (to uncover market trends).

What are the advantages of using a Multiple Choice Question?

Easy to respond: Answering a multiple choice question is very quick as compared to an open-ended question. As respondents don’t have to evaluate a question and think about writing a relevant answer, this question type helps to drastically reduce the response time.

Better Analysis: Using multiple-choice questions in your survey streamlines the process of data analysis and report generation. With effective survey software, it gets easy to filter out responses and evaluate the answer options selected by the respondents.

Numerous Options to Choose: By offering respondents multiple answer options to choose from, this question type helps them pick the right option that resonates with their ideas. It also helps the respondents to understand the question in a more intrinsic way.

Actionable Insights: Using multi-choice questions empower researchers to delve deeper into the respondents’ opinions, preferences, as well as choices. Based on the answer options that respondents select, it gets easy to understand their likes/dislikes. These insights play a critical role in developing a product or service strategy.
