What is a survey?

A survey is a questionnaire framed in a way that gathers structured information or feedback. Most businesses and organizations use surveys to collect data from people which is then analyzed to derive results and conclusions from it.

What are survey question types?

Surveys aren’t only about yes/no questions; most survey software has hundreds of different question types. To decide which questions you need to create a survey,  it is better to understand what type of data are u trying to collect. 

 

Here are some of the question types based on the type of data you can gather. 

 

Categorical/ Nominal Questions – If you want a basic count, such as “35 percent of individuals said ABC” or “20 percent of males and 24 percent of women…”, you can use categorical questions. 

This includes the following question types- 

  • Yes/no
  • Checkbox
  • Multiple choice

 

Ordinal Questions – “Ordinal” questions are those with a definite order of replies. Ordinal question analysis is similar to nominal question analysis in that we may obtain counts and percentages. With ordinal-level data, we can’t find averages or analyze relationships.

How to create a survey? A step-by-step guide

Conducting a survey is a task when you are rooting for quality data and meaningful accurate insights. Hence it is important that you know every step of conducting a survey.

  • Define a purpose 

The purpose of a survey is nothing but what your survey will do for you. So, for instance, your purpose can be “We want to know what our customers think of our newly launched product.” 

 

This becomes your survey purpose and you will design the survey questions around it. Topic names for the same could be “Customer feedback survey” or “Product feedback survey”.


  • Frame appropriate questions  

How well your survey performs majorly depends on how you frame the questions. It only makes sense to have limited but meaningful questions when you create a survey.

 

Each question should add significant value to your survey research and contribute to the goal.  


  • Keeping it short and simple  

Framing long surveys with lots of questions can push the respondents away. When they get into answering and if your survey is literally never-ending, respondents will just feel bored and frustrated, resulting in abandoning the survey halfway.  

 

It is always advised to keep the surveys short and focus on framing only those questions which are directly relevant to the survey topic.  


  • Avoid biased language

Most of the time when you are framing questions and answer options, there can be some words or phrases that might influence respondents to answer that question in a particular way.

 

For example, asking “How good do you think our customer service is?” is a leading question. This might mislead the respondents who feel the service was not good.  


  •  Add survey rewards  

Incentives can be in the form of discounts, offers, gifts, vouchers, gift cards, and so on. Incentives on survey responses help you to get people to answer your survey.


  • Soft launch

After you create a survey test the survey potential by sharing it among your friends or colleagues. This will help you discover difficulties respondents can face and you can correct them right away. Doing so will reduce the chances of skewed or incorrect results. 


  • Deploy the survey 

You can choose whichever online or offline platforms you like to distribute your survey to the audience. Online platforms can be emails, social media platforms, SMS, etc. While you can also conduct in-person interviews or via CATI or IVR.
